Ceylon cinnamon is one of the iconic productions of Sri Lanka and it received the very first European Union Geographical Indication (GI certification) and status on 02nd February 2022. It is now included in the register of Protected Designations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications (PGI). The quality, reputation and the product attributes are usually strongly connected with it’s geographical origin. The GI logo showcase the connection between the relevant geographical region and the product name. The GI logo acts as an intellectual property right (IP) which protects the product from being misused by third parties.
Cinnamon cut quills, cinnamon powder, cinnamon leaf oil and bark oil are the four product types of Ceylon cinnamon which are covered by the GI certificate. The whole country is entitled to use the GI logo and it show case the effort in unison that particular geographical area such as of the cinnamon suppliers, planters, manufacturers, traders, exporters and other authoritative bodies as well.
Ceylon cinnamon can be easily set apart from the other varieties based on it’s even skin, Golden Brown skin colour, thin bark, low levels of coumarin which is a harmful substance and sweeter but harsh taste. Cinnamon quills making technique is a traditional method inherent to Sri Lankans which with their expertise is peeled into unformed thickness skins and the gaps are filled with small cinnamon layers in a cylindrical shape. The unique characteristics of the Ceylon cinnamon are due to the climatic, soil related and human related factors of Sri Lanka..
